Robert Carlyle, of Full Monty and 007 baddie fame , has given us his view on the matter.

Actually, we wonder whether he would consider The James Bond movie he made to be a British movie. We regard all movies made in Britain by workers based here (of any nationality) to be British films. Robert Carlyle wants a quota of British cinema screens for British films. By his definition, American financed product would not qualify. By ours, it would.

If it is made here (even in Portugese) with British based film workers (who may be from any and every country) then it is British …by our definition.

The French would admire Carlyle’s view. Our view is that if he was in more movies of the quality of the Full Monty that you would not need quotas in cinemas. The key was the screenplay; thescript; the story. The technical skills are ALWAYS here. That is a given.

Too often, with respect to Mr Carlyle, his “British financed” films have been useless as a brief read of the script would tell any cinemagoer who actually queues and pays to get in.  Interestingly his TV work has been consistently brilliant (from his King James VI to Hitler). Again the key was the script.

A good idea; a great story; well executed.  This is the winning formula.

Well executed is a given in Britain once the physical infrastructure is spread around the UK by a wise Government/private sector.

Robert Carlyle is a brilliant actor but could learn much from Christopher Lee who has made about 800 movies in 6 languages. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE STORY ! Get that great story and the rest will work.

Further, if you make poor films because you have poor stories, then do not charge the same as people who get magnificent stories and spend $300 million on manufacturing and advertising them.

Very very few great movies with great stories failed to get distributed in the shops ie cinemas  UK.  No manufacturer can expect to force the public to buy rubbish goods !

We want the very best stories made here in Britain by British based film workers. We need infrastructure, film factory facilities in every county, NOT quotas in shops for rubbish goods  ie rubbish British financed films in  cinemas.

The problem about the South East mentality is that very few people there know what the public wants. Too few funders represent the average cinema goer.  Too many despise PRETTY WOMAN,  DIEHARD, CON AIR, STAR TREK 4, STAR WARS, CROCODILE DUNDEE, GHOSTBUSTERS, TROPIC THUNDER,  BATMAN, THE BOURNE IDENTITY, so they can not be expected to pick winners and waste public Lottery money. Actors in demand can read scripts and avoid them. Those not in demand see it as better than McDonalds.

It is all about the story Robert.
