A very credible source with a fine track record in the industry informs us that
“Did you know that Pinewood Studios have just sold the back lot at Shepperton for gravel extraction? Ridley Scott’s film “Robin Hood” was the last one to be filmed on this facility”
Many others have informed us that the present Pinewood Shepperton plc management are considering selling off Shepperton and we wonder if Sir Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott will be thrilled if this actually happens. These people loved Shepperton, did great work there, bought it in the early 1990s, sold it for £35 million to a group supposed to cherish and make films there.
If this is already happening, then The Government and Opposition should be taking immediate action.
The British Film Industry is in real danger. This is one of the very few things the world still wants to buy from us (British based film manufactured goods). Lord Mandelson has just urged West Midland firms to export to Asia. What does Asia buy which is made in Britain: FILMS. Usually Hollywood financed but produced in Britain in British factories.
We need more factory facilities NOT LESS. We need to build these where people want them, NOT IN THE ONLY PLACE THEY DO NOT ie Iver Heath and Fulmer greenbelt.
We need to retain the film factory facilities with global brand names, not sell them off.
