Interesting survey, most people signing the petitions to save UKFC do not know that it did not finance The Full Monty nor Slumdog Millionaire ? The bunch are so confused, so misled by UKFC spin, that they will believe any UKFC lie. They cling to it as if it is their only hope of their dream to be in films. It is not. It was their biggest obstacle. But hey it is now finished.
We see a very astute post in a national newspaper which normally cheerleads for super-expensive UKFC and pockets its advertising largesse in return. You know the game is up when this gets printed.
“ When a possible merger with the BFI was being explored recently, the BFI board nearly fainted to a man and woman when presented with the size of the salaries at UKFC. Has anyone referred back to the public-private agency that funded British production before UKFC – British Screen – run by Simon Relph and latterly Simon Perry? During the 10 years with Perry at its head, British Screen backed 144 films, had a staff of 15 people, and an annual overhead of about £1m. Their production and development team was four people. UKFC had six for each of its three funds”.
Yeah and just before UKFC spoiled it all by spoiling themselves on unprecedented Lottery Money, we had films such as :
‘The Full Monty’, ‘Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, ‘Shallow Grave’, ‘Trainspotting’, ‘Brassed Off’, ‘Elizabeth’, ‘Shakespeare In Love’, ‘The Winslow Boy’, ‘Mrs Brown’, ‘Wind In The Willows’, ‘Sense And Sensibility’, ‘The Madness of King George’, ’Gandhi’, ‘Passage to India’, ‘Room With a View’, ‘Four Weddings and A Funeral’, ‘Mona Lisa’, ‘The Long Good Friday’, ‘Henry V’,’Shirley Valentine’, ‘Educating Rita’, ‘The Mission’, the Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan 007 James Bond movies, “Elephant Man”, ‘Bean’, ‘Nuns on The Run’, ‘Flash Gordon’, ‘The Shining’,’The French Lieutenant’s Woman’, ’Gregory’s Girl’, The Peter Ustinov Agatha Christie movies, ‘Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence’, ‘The Bounty’, ‘A Private Function’, ‘Clockwise’, ‘Withnail and I’, ‘Cry Freedom’, ‘Hope and Glory’, ‘Wish You Were Here’, ‘Memphis Belle’, Chaplin, Howard’s End, ‘The Remains of The Day’, ‘The Crying Game’, ‘Shadowlands’, ‘The Browning Version’, ‘Little Voice’, ‘Sliding Doors’, ‘East is East’, ‘Without A Clue’, ‘Little Dorrit’ and “Chariots of Fire”.
UKFC gave us the woman pulled out of her car and gang raped over and over and over in ‘Straightheads’. UKFC gave us ‘1 day’ which insulted the people murdered by the notorious gangs concerned in Birmingham.
UKFC gave us ‘The Sex Lives of The Potato Men’ which even its most fanatical supporters refuse to try to defend.
Of course if you consider incitement to gang rape something the UK taxpayer should finance, then sign the petition to save UKFC. If you consider the list of movies including ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Four Weddings’, ‘Notting Hill’, ‘Shakespeare In Love’, ‘Elizabeth’, ‘Mrs Brown’, ‘Withnail and I’, ‘Remains of The Day’, and ‘Chariots of Fire’ inferior to the UKFC ‘Sex Lives of The Potato Men’, well just sign the petition today.
The UKFC had far more money to play with on the taxpayer and took British film Making below the level it was when monies were distributed by far fewer people with far less money.
UKFC did not finance ‘Slumdog Millionaire’….good job someone else did. This was Celador Films and Channel Four. The distributor was the French company Pathe Pictures. No one is abolishing them.
UKC were useless. How could you miss the chance to finance Slumdog ? Please note a lot of work on it was done at Pinewood Studios in Iver Heath, South Bucks and the 8 Oscar Wins were seen as 100% British and British Film Industry.
