In the early 1990s the British crews working on blockbusters were almost certainly working in Los Angeles.
LA peaked as a movie production capital in 1996 but ever since films have been moving to other parts of North America, Europe, New Zealand and China.
True the financial decisions and greenlighting of movies is still mainly in LA and 5378 film days in 2010 is outstanding for anywhere except Hollywood. True Spiderman 4 is being made there right now. A big budget movie indeed.
But the facts are that this is under 50% of the 1996 level and it looks like the rest can leave LA by 2020.
In 1911 everyone thought New York, or London, or Paris, and not a Californian desert (in a California with only 1.6 million people) would become the world movie capital. By 1920 Hollywood had proved them wrong.
However, in 2011 the dominance of Hollywood is in great doubt. New York, Detroit and New Orleans grabbed some of the movies but even more so London, Berlin, Toronto, Paris, Eastern Europe and get ready for Malaysia (2012), India and China.
In 2000 The US cinema market gave 80% of cinema revenue for movies. You had to get North American distribution to get finance for a big movie. However, in 2010 73% of revenue for AVATAR came from outside the USA despite the American cinema market increasing. The world has collectively leapfrogged The US cinema market. Failures in The US cinema market can now be big box office hits because different markets fall in love with a movie.
