‘The Avengers’ smash $1 billion at the global cinema box office, The UK Government and Taxman clamps down on tax avoidance in film investment schemes, and please pray for the peace and prosperity of Jerusalem.

Jonathan Stuart-Brown for Save The British Film industry.

‘The Avengers’ has passed the $1 billion cinema box office total and should now break $1.5 billion.  It is a truly great escapist action picture with lots of laughs. It deserves to do well.

However, when the figures are added up, it will still be the box office outside the US which is seen as ‘the daddy’.  These may still account for over 70% of the final total of cinema revenue. This is part of the post Hollywood trend and when a new centre in Europe emerges, the financial decision-making will move there along with all the actors, writers, directors and crew seeking work in the biggest movies. If the UK built soundstages all around the nation and also built state of the art  sets from outer space, pyramids, Paris, Venice, Moscow, Beijing, etc on a very big scale – well then it could come here.

Hopefully The Culture Secretary after Jeremy Hunt is sacked will see this vision and chase it.

This can create a 250 000 job UK based film industry and a £25 billion a year inward investment.

Meanwhile the Telegraph covers reasonably accurately the story that thousands of investors who have pumped billions of pounds into film finance schemes face an anxious wait to find out whether a recent court decision signals the end of lucrative tax breaks.

Confidence in aggressive film finance schemes has been shattered after HM Revenue & Customs won a landmark case against a billion-pound tax-avoidance scheme, leaving investors in similar schemes wondering whether they will receive the millions of pounds of tax relief that motivated them to invest in the schemes in the first place.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/investing/9260526/Film-investment-could-lose-tax-breaks.html

The simple rule is do not invest in movies UNLESS you see a viable chance of a profit from these movies AND can cope with the loss of the investment if things do not work out. Tax relief is a bonus and can be as risky a bet as any other when cases go to law.

We focus on the nation (public-private) investing in physical infrastructure (sound stages and sets) which attract all private sector investment in individual film production (of any real magnitude).

The film industry (with the sound stages and sets in each region to release all the business and creative talent)  can finance vital public services.

Public expenditure must now be cut in the UK and in many areas it should be BUT there is one absolute exception.

Cuts of 20% of UK frontline police is massive and will affect people all over the UK – although the Westminster village will still probably get an increase not decrease in police resources.

Save The British Film Industry does not oppose all public spending cuts, indeed we encourage cuts in the film and arts quangos and their croney bureaucracies (which to repeat shore up corrupt croneyism and limit access of most people in the UK to enter the film industry) and we only approve of public spending (especially ring fenced Lottery Money) on physical infrastructure in film making (sound stages, sets, essential equipment) in every region of the UK . The film industry and most arts -if the physical infrastructure is there- will generate and magnetise inward investment and private patronage either seeking profit or kudos/glory.

However, vital public services should be fully financed by the public purse. The police are top of the list. Their budget and manpower should be increased in 2012 and not reduced by 20%.

Please listen to the police spokesperson.

Please support this cause. The police are a special case.

http://www.polfed.org/mediacenter/get_involved.asp

it is the media battle which will be decisive in pressurising a bunch of inept politicians to do the right thing.

Police budgets and police numbers should be increased and not decreased.

Police keep people safe. The only people who want police cuts are criminals.

A frightened society will become cruel and poor.We want a well staffed, high morale police force.

So please pray for and support the police today. Lobby MPs, write letters, get on radio phone ins, phone up local and national AND international newspapers and TV companies. Get the US press interested. Get the French and German press. Get RTV News interested. This Government hates to be shamed in international media because they see the government jobs as part of their social life. They hate to be ridiculed and embarassed at parties. The Government can back down on police cuts with a big concerted push.

Further give thanks to God for the superb police force the UK has been given.

Next please please please pray for the peace and prosperity of Jerusalem and Israel. Please pray for the protection of Jerusalem and Israel. This nation faces a nuclear bomb being aimed at it. It has got used to levels of daily and nightly bombing which no other nation could tolerate for so very long.  Please pray for Jerusalem and Israel as the neighbours all make more and more genocidal threats.

The Avengers is a great movie but they will not be there in real life. The police will be if we devote public taxes to their upkeep.

The Avengers is a great movie but will not be there to protect Israel and Jerusalem. Pray God defends Israel and Jerusalem.

The police, fire fighters, doctors, nurses, ambulance staff, disabled care workers should not be cut. They are real public services.
