Pinewood Studios has failed in the first stage of its fresh planning planning application to build on greenbelt land in South Bucks, just west of London.

We hope that Pinewood Studios will now consider a UK expansion away from Iver Heath and Fulmer in South Bucks. the locals love and cherish their greenbelt. The rest of the UK wants to welcome Pinewood and it seems the region which wants it most is the West Midlands. If other regions want it even more, then speak up.

The likelihood is that Pinewood Studios will now spend many more millions on lawyers chasing an Appeal and Public Inquiry to get the South Bucks decision reversed.

Hopefully they will choose a UK wide expansion in places where they are warmly welcome.

First of all like we pray Mrs Thatcher rests in peace and that her children and grandchildren are comforted in their grief.

Mrs Thatcher had one of the most mixed and most complicated legacies in modern history. The country was and is understandably divided over her. We pray those who were hurt will find healing.

This is just a brief note of things especially relevant to the website’s core interests.

First, Mrs Thatcher was at the height of The Cold War – with nuclear weapons pointing at the country – extremely and justifiably afraid that the left wing (but very rich and connected) elite  would use the cinema to make big lavish budget movie versions of the pathetically low budget Channel 4 anti-USA movies in the early 1980s.  As a result she was very happy for the ownership, production, finance and all UK cinemas to pass 100% to Hollywood control.  Thus, now a 100% UK financed big budget movie would not get on a UK cinema chain even if identical to the same movie financed by Hollywood. We have the third biggest film market in the world based on revenue but all the profits still exit the UK and all significant production (every year) in the UK depends on the whim of US decision-makers. Now that the UK no longer has the physical infrastructure  advantage of sound stages (which we did have until a few years ago) so the annual US patronage may disappear.

Second, Mrs Thatcher  was the London Prime Minister. Up to 1984 the population of London was falling and Birmingham (and other Midlands and Northern cities were) rising.  A cross-party political decision but led by Mrs Thatcher  decided this must be reversed. Thus all meaningful capital and political power and media was moved to London. Britain was great when media, capital and political power was decentralised in the regions.  By the early 1990s there were 94 comedy clubs in London on a Friday night and only 3 in the rest of the UK. The number of live music stages outside London was minimal (which meant most of the 1960s pop and rock talent would not have been discovered). It is not talent nor ambition nor energy but access to physical infrastructure, social networks and finance which decides creative careers. London lightweights were elevated and the rest of the UK abandoned.

Mrs Thatcher would at least welcome and send genuine Christian cards, believed in CHRIStmas and Easter, and had a reasonable knowledge of The Bible for the era in which she was raised. She held the line against immorality and amorality in schools, but seemed to turn blind eyes in Whitehall and The City provided you were ‘one of us’ fighting Soviet Communism and overt Marxism. Here she was outfoxed and cultural Marxism which in the very small gene pool of London found it especially easy to infiltrate  comedy, music, ‘charities’, quangos, media etc

Mrs Thatcher was broadly pro-Israel and pro-Jewish. She deserves great credit for this. She received the Genesis 12 verse 3 blessing. However, she did wobble and fell a few days after selling missiles to Syria which would be aimed at Israel.

It is hard to assess whether she ever had a one on one encounter with Jesus Christ.

She under-estimated the power and importance of film and TV and the creative genius in this nation (the entire nation).

Mrs Thatcher failed the  President Sadat test of leadership but then again most leaders do.

She did not have a crystal clear crown trained up prince to take over if she suddenly was not there. One ready and able to continue her work.  She fell for the trap of several possible crown princes to help her retain power. As a result all the best parts of her work were undone by successors and the worst parts were accelerated.

Again may God bless her soul, and she was a political lion among ants, who were succeeded by far far smaller ants.

The lesson from Mrs Thatcher is that power rests in every home not in Westminster (no matter how big the lion in Number Ten Downing Street). The power to seek God, to repent, to pray, to praise The Creater and provider of every tangible Blessing. When we repent, pray, praise as a nation, then God blesses us as a nation. If not, then not. We lose the Blessings we have.  Cold this winter in this amoral immoral land is it not ?

• To foster repentance for the sins of Gentile Christians and the Christian Church against the Jewish people, especially for the suppression of the corporate Jewish witness to Yeshua, the Messiah.
• To foster intercession for all the churches of the nations to abandon all forms of replacement teaching concerning the calling and election of Israel and to recognize the place of the Jew in the body of Messiah.
• To encourage the Messianic Jewish community in and out of Israel to enter into this vision of reconciliation and restoration and thereby fostering unity among the different streams and organizations within the Messianic Jewish Movement.

The Executive Committee will seek to do everything possible to forward a convocation of a second Council of Jerusalem. This can only happen under the special leading of the Holy Spirit. Only the Holy Spirit can show us how a Council recognized by all churches, denominations and movements can be possible.

Within this process toward a second Council of Jerusalem there would be a gathering in Jerusalem as representative of churches/ denominations and continents as possible for the purpose of issuing a call to the whole Christian world for the recognition of the church of the circumcision at a second Council of Jerusalem.

We are doing this so that God may be honored in the reconciling work of His Son through the healing of the original schism in the Body of Christ, that between the Jewish and the Gentile components.

Speaking at a Board of Deputies event the Labour leader said he was opposed to boycotts of Israel and warned of the need to be “ever-vigilant”against antisemitism.

Asked whether he would work to ensure religious slaughter and circumcision practices could continue in Britain, Mr Miliband said: “Yes, these are important traditions. The kosher issue has recently been brought to my attention. Ways of life must be preserved.”

He added: “I take antisemitism very seriously. Any kind of delegitimisation of Israel is something we should call out for what it is and not tolerate it.

“I think the boycotts of Israel are totally wrong. We should have no tolerance for boycotts. I would say that to any trade union leaders.”

For the above Ed Miliband deserves great credit. Alas as Dan Hodges points out Ed Miliband seems not to understand what Zionism means (100% belief God gave the land of Israel to the Children of Abraham, Isaac and Israel and his children forever ) and sadly Ed makes some unwise remarks about Israel not having the absolute right and duty to build houses on their land.

Miliband still seems confused and a tad immature, but he may be seeking the Truth albeit walking in a very wobbly way in the right direction. He is still in the two-state solution mentality which is poking God in the eye. Hopefully God will give him the grace to grow out of this nonsense.

Under Obama Hollywood and LA has far far fewer film days than it did under George Bush and President Clinton. Well under 50% of Clinton.

The show is leaving town as regards film.

The soft power in foreign policy which The US has exercised via Hollywood for a hundred years is now collapsing. There are far fewer films being made there -albeit bigger budget ones – and by 2020 the game will be up.

Without doubt JJ Abrams is a great director and a great producer. A great guy. A very talented man. The reboot of Star Trek was a revelation and the sequel is eagerly anticipated.

However, JJ Abrams may have no idea how very much the original Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi owed to the genius of British crews in Elstree Studios. What was a cheap movie with no name American actors became the biggest box office movies of the generation. Allow for inflation and they still are.

The  new Star Wars screenplay -written by Michael Arndt, the man who wrote ‘Toy story 3′, should be excellent full of action, humour, heart, hope and inspiration.

Disney paid $4 billion to Lucasfilm – mainly for the rights to make three Star Wars movies – but unlike say Warners, Universal or Paramount, they are not as  clear on the genius of British based crews and sound stages. Just look at WHERE the biggest box office smashes are consistently made and look at where and by who The Star Wars franchise was manufactured.

Spielberg and George Lucas discovered the genius of British film crews and physical sound stage infrastructure in the 1970s. So did  Harry Saltzman and Cubby Broccoli in the very early 1960s with the 007 franchise.

Star Trek is ironically one of the very few highly successful Hollywood franchises with minimal British input – apologies to Patrick Stewart – where it really matters : behind the camera. JJ Abrams may find that unless he bases Star Wars VII in British studios with British crew that it might lack whatever it was that made the series supremely successful and not just another low budget cheap sci-fi production.

Hollywood is still the world film capital because it has blessed Israel and Jerusalem for over 100 years.

If you were in a fight, you wanted Michael Winner on your side.

Winner was a great producer, a talented star character actor (always playing Michael Winner), and on a few occasions in the 1960s and 70s an excellent director.

He blessed the nation with his wit, manner, verve.

He had zero tolerance of crime and would have been an outstanding Home Secretary or High Court Judge.

He had met literally everybody he wanted to meet and dated everyone he had wanted to date.

He loved women and mostly they loved him.

He had fights with Hollywood tough guys such as Burt Lancaster, made Charles Bronson a major star, blessed the later career of Peter Ustinov and several Hollywood golden era greats.

He made restaurants raise their standards in England and he championed little people.

He deserves respect for ensuring every police officer killed in the line of duty got a statue, and educated the rest of us how very many there were losing their lives for our protection.

He was a blessing to London.

His YES was YES and his NO was NO.

May God bless him and welcome him into Heaven, where he may well complain about the food, decor, bathrooms, view, etc etc

MGM was once the biggest, boldest, most profitable and the best Hollywood Studio.

Its decline through loss of nerve in the 1960s is a lesson that a wise British Government would heed.

MGM pulled thirty major lavish big budget productions which would have been groundbreaking, believing the industry was in decline and that TV would kill off cinema-going on large scale. In fact cinema-going revived massively and DVD, pay-on-demand, ever newer technological versions of DVD and online, merchandising, videogames, and crucially remakes and reboots have made any big brandname movie a stellar cash cow for generations to come.

MGM would have many more huge brandname movie franchises if it had not lost its nerve in the 1960s.

There followed in the 70s and 80s massive miscalculation and mismanagement, selling off the crown jewels and yet, and yet, MGM still has a great back library and still has a few staggering brandnames which can mint money (although now mostly for rivals SONY and WARNER BROS for bailout loans they made to MGM).

“The Hobbit” and “Skyfall,” will both make comfortably over $1 billion from cinema run, with perhaps treble from DVD, online, TV, merchandising over the next twenty years. Moreover the next few 007 movies and the two Hobbit sequels will keep the billion dollar movies flowing nicely. To get these made, MGM had to let Sony and Warner Bros. take much of the international cinema and video revenues, in exchange for lending MGM the money to finance the 2012 movie hits.

If only MGM still had the thirty big franchises it should have greenlit in the 1960s to go alongside them.

It gets hard to get back in the game after you miss big opportunities.

Nonetheless on the back of Skyfall and The Hobbit, MGM is  refinancing its debt in a deal that will give it the opportunity to invest more in its own films and possible new media acquisitions.

JP Morgan, Bank of America, Royal Bank of Canada and private lenders are  extending MGM’s current credit line from $500 million to about $650 million enabling MGM to pay off SONY and WARNER BROS which lent it the money to finance Skyfall and The Hobbit.

The point is that MGM has not been banking the vast profits from the movies made with its brandnames because it could not finance their production. The main upside of it getting more movies made – and their box office success – is that  MGM can now borrow on better terms to finance more projects on its own, rather than co-financing or borrowing from competiter studio partners.

MGM may also try the Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter route to financial well-being. This is to float the company and sell shares to the public.

Gary Barber has been the boss since 2010 and just may get the funds to give MGM a new golden age, in which it makes hit movies and keeps the funds to re-invest.

Of course if he wants free lands to build a film and tv studio production facility in the UK, he only needs to talk to us.
